Piercing After Care

piercing after care

Fast Cleaning Instructions

  1.  WASH HANDS
  2.  USE SALINE (1x a day)
  3.  PAT DRY WITH PAPER TOWEL

Cleaning Solutions

We always carry sterile saline in store, a small can is $10 a large can is $15.

  •  Packaged sterile saline is the best choice for piercing after care. Mixing your own is an option but not recommended because getting the salt to purified water ratio can be tricky and can cause dryness and further irritation.
  •  We encourage you to use a packaged sterile saline labeled for use as a wound wash.
  •  Do not use contact lens saline, nose spray saline, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, ointments, lotions, or soap. These products can be harsh on a new piercing.

Detailed Cleaning Instructions - Ear and Body Piercings

  •  Wash hands before cleaning or touching your piercing for any reason.
  • Spray your sterile saline solution as needed during the healing process but we

generally recommend once, no more then twice a day.

  • We do NOT recommend touching, turning, or moving your jewelry during the

healing process as this can cause unnecessary irritation to a new piercing.

  • We do NOT recommend using products such as cotton balls or anything that had

fibers that can get stuck on the jewelry, this can harbor bacteria and could

potentially lead to infection.

  • Using a warm damp paper towel works well to remove excess build up such as

scabs or crusts. Alternatively, you can let them fall off naturally. Forcing

them off can cause irritation.

  • Rinse your new piercing well with warm water before getting out of a shower.

This will help rinse out any soaps or products that could get in the piercing

while bathing.

  • Dry your piercings by patting gently with clean paper towel. Cloth towels can

harbor bacteria or injury by snagging the piercing.

Recommendations

  •  It is encouraged to wash and change your bedding regularly.

Wear clean, comfortable, breathable, clothing while sleeping.

Avoid high waisted or tight clothing that can cause a new piercing to get

bumped or snagged.

  • Go to a professional piercer to get at least your first jewelry change on a

piercing to get appropriate sizing and this helps to avoid changing the jewelry

before the piercing is ready to be changed.

  • Remember that a piercing heals from the outside in. A piercing can seem like

it is done healing but the inside is still healing so be patient and wait the

allotted time before changing the jewelry.

  • If you plan to keep a piercing don't leave the jewelry out. Evan a healed

piercing can close quickly if the hole is left empty, leave jewelry in to help

avoid having to get a piercing redone!

  • What Is Normal During Healing?:
  • Some bleeding, soreness, localized swelling, tenderness, localized redness

and/or bruising.

  • Some discoloration, itching, and secretions (whiteish, pale yellow, and

clear).

  • Secretions can dry on the jewelry and may cause build up. Clean off as

recommended in cleaning section above.

  • If daily cleaning is NOT done, smelly odors may occur.

What To Avoid

  •  Avoid wet hair resting on piercing, hair products, hair dyes, cleaning products (such as makeup remover/face wash), makeup, excess moisture, bumping, snagging, or moving jewelry throughout the healing process. These can cause injury, delay in healing, excess irritation and soreness.
  •  Do NOT remove initial piercing jewelry before the recommended time given to you by the piercer. Generally anywhere between 4-6 weeks, possibly longer depending on how swollen the area is.
  • Avoid submerging your healing piercing in water. Showers are better during healing. If you bathe in a bathtub clean it well before, rinse your piercing very well after you get out of the tub, and pat dry. Again a shower is recommended.
  •  Avoid over cleaning. This can lead to dryness and overall irritation to piercing.
  •  Avoid hanging charms and dangling jewelry until the piercing is fully healed.
  •  Do NOT sleep on healing piercings. If you sleep on your side use a travel pillow or piercing pillow with a hold in the center and place your ear in hole for better protection while sleeping.
  • Avoid swimming -  If you still choose to do this protect your piercing using a waterproof wound-sealant bandage.
